In PHE 540, you will assess the human health risks associated with environmental hazards. Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA) is a process for determining whether detected contaminants or illnesses pose a risk to human health and the environment. The HHRA falls under the evaluation step of the voluntary agreement process and involves using environmental data to estimate the nature, magnitude, and probability of adverse health effects on people who may be exposed to the adverse environmental factors.

The Four Steps of the HHRA Process:
Step: Hazard Identification
What It Involves: What is the threat, and where does it exist?
Step: Exposure Assessment
What It Involves: How might people come into contact with the hazard?
Step: Toxicity Assessment
What It Involves: What biological effect does it have? (if applicable)
Step: Risk Characterization
What It Involves: Summarizing health risks by combining data from the first three steps)

- Part A- Planning with the 5Ws: Descriptive epidemiology: what, who, where, when, why
- Part B- Annotated Bibliography: Three annotated sources analyzing health determinants (biological, social, and political)
Milestone Two
- Part A- Hazard Identification: Includes toxicokinetics, toxicodynamics, and concept mapping
- Part B- Dose-Response: Adverse health effects at different exposure levels
- Part C- Exposure: Pathways and routes of exposure
