Finding and attending pre-scheduled sessions
Workshops, Office Hours and Academic Coaching meetings take place in an online classroom where you can talk, type, share screens and collaborate with a learning support specialist or coach.
This document explains how attend a session that is already scheduled. Learn how to schedule a session here.
1. Five minutes before your session starts, log into Brightspace, open your course, and click Academic Support.
2. Find the blue banner for your session on the landing page. Use the LAUNCH button to enter the classroom for your session. If you are early, it will be accessible five minutes before your session begins. You will know when the session is ready to launch when the button text turns from grey to black.
How to prepare for a Workshop session:
Workshops are live guided presentations focused on a specific skill, assignment type, course, or content area. They also include opportunities to engage with the material, ask brief questions, and follow along with examples. You may want to bring paper and a pencil, or have a digital note-taking method ready. You can choose to engage with the host or sit back and listen. If you have a more in-depth or course-specific question, an Office Hours session may be a better fit. You can attend Workshop sessions as often as you would like. Workshop sessions are also recorded, so even if you are not able to attend live, signing up gives you access to view the material afterward.
How to prepare for an Office Hours session:
Office Hours are hosted by subject matter experts who can access course materials and rubrics. These sessions are a good fit for course-specific questions, rubric clarification, assignment expectations, and questions that may need more individual support. You will want to come prepared with your questions, course code, rubric, draft documents, and/or any other relevant materials. Since the host may need to answer questions from multiple students during a group session, coming prepared helps you get the most out of your time. You can attend Office Hours sessions as often as you would like. Office Hours sessions are also recorded, so even if you cannot attend live, signing up gives you access to view the material afterward.
How to prepare for an Academic Coaching session:
Academic Coaching can help with broader academic skills like time management, study strategies, motivation, organization, and planning for success. Come prepared with questions, goals, and any relevant context about your schedule, responsibilities, or challenges so you and your coach can work together on a plan for success.
When the session opens, you will be inside our interactive classroom. Click the Microphone and Camera buttons to get started, Allow Audio and Video, then Publish to interact with the host. You can also choose to blur your background, as pictured below. If you would rather not use cameras, let the learning support specialist or coach know in the chat. We will match your preferences!
3. Communicate with your host using the microphone or chat box. In coaching and office hours sessions, you are invited to chat with the host via your microphone. However, during workshop sessions, the host may prefer you keep communication limited to the chat for the duration of the presentation; they will let you know.
4. You can share your screen with the host if, if needed. Click the share icon on the top left to begin.
- Choose a tab, window, or your entire screen, then click "Share."The host will then be able to see your paper, your course, your rubric; whatever you want them to help you with. To stop sharing, click "Stop Sharing" at the bottom of your screen.
5. When you're ready to end your session, simply close the window.
6. You can view a recording of your session under “My Account” and "Previous Sessions." Read the full instructions on recordings here.
Enjoy your session!
