What is the service "Written Feedback"?

How to Use Written Feedback

Written Feedback allows you to upload part of a writing assignment and receive feedback from a writing tutor within 12 hours. You will complete a short form, explain what you are working on, describe the help you need, and upload your document.

Expand or collapse content Step 1: Select the kind of help you need.

Open the first drop-down menu and choose one of the following:

  • Drop-Off Essay Review
  • Drop-Off Doctoral Writing Review

Choose the option that matches your academic level and assignment.

Expand or collapse content Step 2: Tell us whether this is a new or previous draft.

This helps the tutor understand whether they are reviewing a first draft or a revised version.

Expand or collapse content Step 3: Enter the draft due date.

In the box labeled "When is this draft due?" enter the date your current draft must be completed or submitted.

Expand or collapse content Step 4: Enter the final due date.

In the box labeled "When is your final version of this essay due?" enter the date the completed assignment is due. Providing both dates helps the tutor understand how much time you have to make revisions.

Expand or collapse content Step 5: Describe your topic.

In the "What is the topic of your paper?" box, briefly explain what your paper is about.

For example:

My paper explains how social media use can affect teenagers’ mental health.

Expand or collapse content Step 6: Select where you are in the writing process.

Use the "Where are you in the writing process?" menu to choose the option that best describes your progress.

Expand or collapse content Step 7: Explain your assignment and the help you need

In the assignment description box, explain what your instructor asked you to complete. Include any important directions, requirements, or grading information.

You may also paste part of the assignment instructions or rubric into the box.

Explain what you would like the tutor to focus on. You may ask for help with areas such as:

  • Your thesis or main idea
  • Organization
  • Paragraph development
  • Use of evidence
  • Transitions
  • Clarity
  • Sentence structure
  • Grammar patterns
  • Citations
  • Source use

For example:

My instructor asked me to write a five-page persuasive essay using three scholarly sources. Please focus on my thesis, organization, and whether I clearly connect my evidence to my argument.

Expand or collapse content Step 8: Select your citation format.

Use the citation format menu to select the style required for your assignment. You can leave this section black if none were used.

Expand or collapse content Step 9: Upload your document

Select "Choose File" and attach the part of your assignment that you want the tutor to review.

Accepted file formats include:

  • .doc
  • .docx
  • .txt

The maximum file size is 20 MB.

For PowerPoint presentations and other file formats, use the Drop-in 24/7 service instead.

Expand or collapse content Step 10: Review and submit the form

Check that all required questions are complete and that you uploaded the correct document. Required questions are marked with an asterisk.

Select "Submit" when you are ready.

Before you submit the form, you will be asked to remove personal information from your document to protect your privacy. Remove information such as:

  • Your full name
  • Student identification number
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Other private or identifying information

What Kind of Feedback Will You Receive?

Written Feedback is not a proofreading or correction service. The tutor will not rewrite your paper or correct every mistake for you.

Instead, the tutor will give you guided feedback that helps you improve your writing skills. The feedback will focus on important writing concerns and provide practical strategies you can use while revising.

For example, a tutor may not mark every missing comma in your paper. The tutor may explain the comma rule, identify an example from your writing, and show you how to recognize similar issues throughout the paper.

Your tutor may also provide links to writing resources that can help you continue improving.

How to View Your Previous Feedback

The Previous Feedback section is located underneath the submission form.

After your review is complete:

  1. You will receive an email telling you that your feedback is ready.
  2. Return to the Written Feedback page.
  3. Scroll down to the "Previous Feedback" section.
  4. Open the completed session to view your tutor’s comments.

Your previous sessions and completed feedback will appear in this section after you have used the service.
