In Module 1 we explore statistics. The central tendency of the data set with practice on finding the mean, median, and mode are also covered in Module 1 as well as histograms.
Definitions of Statistics, Probability, and Key Terms
This resource is original to openstax.org and describe that statistics tend to fall into two specific categories—descriptive and inferential. Both types are used in the real world, but descriptive statistics tend to be seen more often. This is because their purpose is to summarize information in a more understandable way. Descriptive statistics appear in the newspaper, in blogs, and even in survey results.
Statistics intro: Mean, median, & mode
Observe the key characteristics of descriptive statistics in this video by Khan Academy. Also look at how they are different from inferential statistics. Pay particular attention to the calculations used in the examples of descriptive statistics.
Mean, median, & mode example
This video by Khan Academy provides extra practice on finding the mean, median, and mode of a data set. These are all calculations to describe the central tendency of the data set. In the real world, these calculations are often done with surveys or data from social media websites. It is easier to describe the key points of a data set than to list them out, one by one, in a report. Practice along with the explanation on the video to see if you understand these calculations.
Histograms
Histograms may at first appear to be a bar graph, but a histogram does not have any gaps between the bars. While a bar graph can be used with categories, a histogram is used for data with possible decimal values. As you watch the video, notice how to determine the width and height of the bars in the graph. This video by Khan Academy will help you understand the basic principles of making a histogram.
