Technology Checklist for New and Returning Students

Adjusting to an online learning environment has its challenges. When preparing for a new term, or starting totally new, learning online is easier if you feel confident using a computer. Read through this list to determine exactly where you need some extra help with technology skills. Place a checkmark next to any statement where you can answer “yes.”

Brightspace

1. I can locate my weekly Modules on Brightspace.

2. I am able to find my instructor’s contact information, class messages, feedback, and grades.

3. I know where the course syllabus is posted.

4. I can open the Academic Support Center.

Microsoft

1. I understand the difference between a Microsoft browser program and a desktop program.

2. I can open my SNHU email inbox.

3. I know how to save my documents in a place where I can find them.

4. I know when a document automatically saves, and when I need to manually save.

5. I can change the font, line spacing, and alignment in Word.

6. I know how to design an effective PowerPoint slide that includes speaker’s notes.

7. I know where to locate the spellcheck, dictionary, and thesaurus tools.

8. I can covert a document into a PDF.

General Computer Skills

1. I downloaded Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or another compatible Internet browser.

2. I know the make/model of my computer and its operating system.

3. I can copy and paste text.

4. I can rename documents and folders.

5. I can locate the Desktop, Documents, and Downloads folders.

6. I know what the different extensions at the end of files mean (.pdf, .docx, .ppt, .xlsx, .jpg)

7. I can attach a file to an email and can also open email attachments that are sent to me.

8. I can search for words that appear in a document or webpage by pressing the “ctrl+f” keys

Organizational Skills

1. I organize my files by creating a new folder for each class that I take.

2. I have a safe place to keep a record of my passwords just in case I ever forget them.

3. I make sure that each document has a unique name that makes it easy for me to find it.
