When using AI as an SNHU student, follow these guidelines to ensure you're using AI appropriately, responsibly, and honestly.

Before using AI as a student, make sure you're aware of SNHU's Student Use Guidelines. You can watch the Student Guide to AI video and How to Use AI video as companions to this infographic. Verify all AI use with your instructor's course policies.

Text Version: 8 Tips for Students using Generative AI

1. Do Use Grammarly

Similar to spell check in Microsoft Word and other software, Grammarly is a software that can help identify grammar mistakes and opportunities to clarify your message. There is a free version of Grammarly. To learn more, see our Introduction to Grammarly Guide

2. Do Use AI Tools to Brainstorm, Clarify, and Organize

Perhaps you are stuck on how to create an analogy, expand on an assignment concept, or create a connection to a relevant story. Use AI tools to help inspire ideas.

3. Acknowledge the Use of AI Tools

Transparency is an important ethical principle to uphold. Indicate when you have used a tool to generate your ideas or clarify information by citing your usage of GenAI in APA, MLA, or Chicago format.

Citation instructions for specific types of AI can be found in the AI Tools articles. For a general format, see the Introduction to ChatGPT Guide or the How to Cite ChatGPT in APA Guide

4. Do Use Your Instructors' Feedback as the Standard

Feedback cannot be truly "personalized" if it is provided by one of these AI tools. Look to your instructor for substantive and relevant feedback regarding your work.

5. Don't Upload SNHU Course Materials to an AI Tool

Confidential data or Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) identifiers are prohibited from being submitted to a Generative AI tool.

6. Don't Assume Gen AI Information is Correct

The Gen AI models might be trained on dated information, leaving you with an inaccurate response, and sometimes the models hallucinate and generate irrelevant or fictional information.

7. Don't Use Gen AI Instead of Your Course Materials

While it is helpful to generate ideas and learn what to research through the uses of an AI tool, this information should never replace your course materials or library research.

8. Don't Copy/Paste the Outputs as Original Work

While you may use these tools for ideation, always customize and personalize the outputs, as it is never appropriate to copy the work of another to pass it off as your own. If you want to learn more about SNHU's Academic Integrity policies, visit the Academic Integrity webpage.
