Learning Objectives
In this course, you will work towards achieving mastery of these competencies:
- Analyze written works using critical reading techniques
- Explain, in a written communication, a writer’s choices in relation to a specific audience, purpose, and subject
- Adapt the writing process to various writing situations
You will demonstrate these competencies in a single project due in Module Seven. For this project, you will write two versions of the same paper, an analysis of a written work.
The project is divided in two parts:
Part One: Analysis of a Written Work for a First Audience
This is the first version of your paper. In it, you will communicate your analysis of a written work to an audience you choose.
Part Two: Analysis of a Written Work for a Second Audience
This is the second version of your paper. The ideas in this version are the same as the first version; what changes is the audience and writing situation.
Each week, you will work on individual pieces, then assemble them into a complete written product.
To write the first version of your paper, you will:
Module One:
- Choose the article you will analyze for the project
- Read the article closely to identify the context, purpose, and core idea
Module Two:
- Identify two audiences and writing situations for the project
- Continue reading the article closely and analyzing it
Module Three:
- Summarize the article
- Practice using evidence from the text to support your analysis
Module Four:
- Write a thesis statement
- Write an introduction that includes that thesis statement and the summary you wrote in Module Three
Module Five:
- Write a full draft of the first version of the paper that includes the introduction you wrote in Module Four
To create the second version of your paper, you will:
Module Two:
- Identify the two audiences and writing situations for the project
Module Three:
- Identify the needs of the audiences you chose
Module Six:
- Practice adapting written communication to a new audience
Module Seven:
- Adapt the draft you wrote in Module Five to the second audience you identified in Module Two
Completing these assignments will also help you develop and refine critical reading and writing skills that will help you with your project and support your growth as a writer.
Think of these skills as an assortment of tools that you can use whenever you need to read critically and express your thoughts in writing. Whether it is in future courses, throughout your career, or in your personal and community engagements, these tools will help you communicate with different audiences.
