Mission Statements

Updated on

Many courses, especially introductory ones, might ask you to create your own mission statement, which will guide you in your academic and professional pursuits.

What is a Mission Statement?

Mission Statement (n). A concise declaration by an organization or individual which states why they do what they do, how they do this work uniquely, and what (specifically) they do.

Notice how we start with the why before the what and the how.

To make your own, ask:

  1. What do I believe or what am I deeply dedicated/committed to?
  2. How does getting this job, degree, an A on this assignment relate to my why?
  3. What is it I plan to do in life, in school, or in my career to achieve my purpose (why)?
